Rothensee waste-to-energy plant

Customer Project in the Field of Industry and Infrastructure

The Rothensee waste-to-energy plant (MHKW) near Magdeburg was successfully commissioned back in 2005. Since 2020, EEW Energy for Waste GmbH, based in Helmstedt, and Städtische Werke Magdeburg have been commissioned to build a new waste incineration plant in addition to the two existing units.

There were many reasons in favour of expanding the plant, not least the high volume of waste, particularly waste with a high calorific value.

In Rothensee, the new block will incinerate around 270,000 tonnes more waste per year than before.

In addition to the centrepiece, the waste incineration plant, an integrated sewage sludge incineration plant was built. This means that a further approx. 55,000 tonnes per year (dry matter content 25%) are disposed of in a professional and energy-saving manner. The completion, handover and subsequent inauguration of the new building was celebrated in September 2024.

Until then, around 650,000 tonnes per year of household waste and similar waste had been thermally converted into electricity and district heating at the power plant. This volume can be increased to approx. 1,000,000 tonnes per year with the new block. This makes the Magdeburg site the largest plant in Germany and one of the largest plants in Europe. The integrated mono sewage sludge incineration also provides sewage sludge ash for phosphorus recycling.

The region benefits from climate and resource-friendly energy and scores highly as an economic factor.

Special Challenges and the Use of poolarPROJECT

The construction of the additional block repeatedly presented the clients with new, unforeseeable challenges. For example, it was not advantageous that the preliminary and design planning phase, the approval phase and the tendering phase of the main lots fell exactly in the corona lockdown phase.

The poolarPROJECT project space enabled the digital networking of all participants and created transparency regarding progress, to-dos and responsibilities. The minutes module enabled the immediate documentation and processing of what was discussed during the online meetings. The allocation of information and tasks “at the touch of a button” directly after meetings to the respective responsible parties facilitated the process.

An unplanned, very extensive deep sounding for the clearance of explosive ordnance took additional time and caused high costs. In addition, there were supply bottlenecks for building materials and electronic components. Thanks to the dashboard, it was possible to keep track of delays and adjusted conditions. Additional costs could be transparently communicated and monitored in the invoice workflow module (project controlling).

At that time, many tenders had not yet been finalised and it was difficult to conclude contracts. The use of the contract module facilitated documentation, overview and finalisation.

Defect Management is enormously helpful for us because we list all defects here. In the past, there were Excel lists that required a lot of effort to maintain. With the defect management system, we have a proper workflow and can directly involve those involved via email and access. In addition, we save time here and have good verification management.

Basic Modules

The digital Workspace, with its structured Plan and File Storage, forms the centerpiece of collaboration in construction projects between all project participants. The Workspace follows the principle of a Common Data Environment (CDE) – a centralized platform for project-related information.

Go to Workspace with Plan and File Storage

Digital, transparent, and structured review of plans, either directly in the online editor or via your own PDF files, including task and deadline tracking.

Go to Planning Review

Efficient creation, linking, and tracking of meeting items and tasks with specific areas for different types of minutes.

Go to Meeting Minutes

Centralized collection of open and finalized decisions. The module ensures transparency of responsibilities and enables clear workflows instead of sprawling email chains across multiple approval levels.

Go to Decision Management

Additional Modules

Digital review, commenting, and approval of invoices, change orders, and hourly work in structured steps – with clear status indicators, deadline tracking, and complete documentation of the approval processes.

Go to Invoice Workflow

Issue Manager according to BCF standards: Distribution, organization, and evaluation of BCF issues directly in the 3D model – regardless of the BIM software used.

Go to BCF Issue Management

Centralized collection, structuring, and maintenance of space-related information—including technical requirements, equipment features, and other project-specific parameters that can be freely configured.
